An imperfect truth

Ironical, how we as women, pooh pooh the very idea of attractiveness thrust upon our reluctant faces (blame the wicked idiot box and all those commercials on air / the glossies / diva-esque Hollywood / Bollywood celebs), and yet, we try our best to conform to what is our ideal of perfection / winsomeness / attractiveness.

We agree that not every girl is cover girl material, a femme fatale, a vision, a knockout, or a looker.

We agree that God didn’t create equals. (Even Archer concurs.

And yet, we crib.

We gripe.

We grumble audibly.

About ourselves.

We are plump.

We are anorexic.

Our hair is too limp / dry / frizzy / curly / voluminous / sparse.

Our skin is too oily / dry / patchy.

We have wrinkles, crow’s feet, stretch marks, ungainly cellulite, blemishes.

Our legs are too long, too short, too thin, too flabby.

We slather lotions and potions from the Dead Sea to closer home, from the Shahnaz’s to the Blossom’s.

We burn holes in our pretty pockets.

Though not masochists, we give pain to ourselves – what else would you call those fortnightly visits to that uber-steep salon?

We powder. We preen. We paint.

And fight our imperfections almost on a daily basis.

A friend moans each time I meet her, always about the same thing – her zits refuse to go, despite her having tried every acne-diminishing cream available in the market.

Another will groan each time she comes even half a mile close to the weighing-scales, but reaches out for that tiramisu in a trice.

I’d groan too.

Each time I’d see my two scars.

Testimony to a naughty-childhood.

Except that, till some time back, I would whimper and call myself “Scarface,” much to my mom’s annoyance, and visible displeasure.

Now I understand their importance.

They may not be beautiful in my eyes still; but they aren’t ugly too.

And assert a past that I do not want to forget.

Three words – Acceptance. Overcoming. Survival.

The scriptures say, “Love thy neighbor.”

I’d say, “Start with yourself.”

International Women's Day

Since last week, I've noticed a fair number of companies waving special schemes, freebies, complimentary packages - all with the same intention - to woo women.

and then it suddenly dawned upon me: oho - Women's Day was just around the corner. And hence, the following: a leading two-wheeler company giving trial runs to women, radio station / channels / newspapers - all urging you to don your 'thinking caps" and name your woman icon, etc etc etc.

Today, I was a tad amused to see the oppo gender at their chivalrous best - opening doors for their female counterpaarts, holding their bags(and laptops), the works.

However, I just want to see if the chivalry continues. Or was it just a one-day fad? (Obviously, I am keeping my fingers crossed).

More on this later.

Happy Womens Day!

Eve-Power

The oldest Ivy League college, Harvard, has added another feather to its illustrious feather, by naming Drew G.Faust, as its 28th President.

Faust, a renowned academician and historian, and founding dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, will become the President, effective July 2007.

This will be the first time that a woman will be taking over the reins of the 450+ year-old University.

Way to go!:-)

Soul Sisters

There are people who read the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and books by that famous Brazilian author, Paulo Coelho. Their stories are simple, tug at your hearts, discuss hopes, dreams, and lives of people like you and me. A potpourri of experiences, feelings, and personal stories land on your reading table, some of them bearing more than a close resemblance to what you feel or go through.

You read about people who communicate eloquently with each other, though they may not have even met. However, that spirit of easy camaraderie and sorority is unmistakable.

This is a real-life story about a woman whom I have never met, yet share a distinctive solidarity with her. I know that today, deep down in her tummy, she has a countless butterflies. the reason - her daughter has a dance performance lined up for the evening. Likewise, despite the 2020 km distance between her and me, she knows that I am supremely excited about my best friend’s engagement tomorrow, but at the same time, anxious that my fave aunt who’s been injured in a hit-and-run case by a devil of a car-driver, convalesce soon.

To my friend sitting in a different city, looking at the clock anxiously, and to my other soul sisters in the country and beyond, this is a little vote of thanks. It’s not just shopping, watching movies together, stuffing ourselves with pani-puris, giggling endlessly, eyeing that cute guy yonder, or talking nineteen-to-the-dozen, that we have in common. It's about hanging in there come what may.

Thanks for being there.

May your tribe abound.
